A recent report highlights a significant shift in the AI search landscape, showing that Google Gemini is now sending more referral traffic to websites than Perplexity AI. This marks a notable reversal from just a few months ago when Perplexity was ahead in driving AI-generated traffic.
According to data analyzed across more than 100,000 websites, Gemini’s referral traffic has grown rapidly, more than doubling within a short period. This surge has pushed it ahead of Perplexity, making Gemini one of the fastest-growing sources of AI-driven website visits.
The spike in traffic appears to be closely tied to Google’s rollout of newer Gemini models and deeper integration across its ecosystem. The growth began around late 2025 and accelerated into early 2026, with month-over-month increases exceeding 50% at one stage.
By January 2026, Gemini was sending approximately 29% more traffic to websites than Perplexity globally. In markets like the United States, the gap was even wider, reaching over 40%.
This shift is particularly striking because just five months earlier, Perplexity had been sending nearly three times more traffic than Gemini. The rapid reversal highlights how quickly the AI search landscape is evolving.
